Oregon-Based Filmmakers Announce We Grew Wings Showings in Salem

Women’s Track and Field Documentary Slated for Salem Showings at the Capitol City Theater in the
Historic Reed Opera House on August 19 at 6:30pm and 8pm.

Salem, OR (July 26, 2012) – We Grew Wings, a documentary film chronicling the untold story of the
University of Oregon women’s track and field team, will make its Salem debut at showings on August 19
at 6:30pm and 8pm. Tickets are $8 or $6 for groups of ten or more.

We Grew Wings is a story of camaraderie, teamwork, struggles, and triumphs. Executive producer, Ellen
Schmidt-Devlin teamed with Oregon-based co-directors Erich Lyttle and Sarah Henderson to showcase
the differences and similarities between two generations of athletes. While the well-known University of
Oregon men’s track and field dominated the spotlight, the early women’s track program strove to break
new ground just as Title IX was presenting challenges and opportunities for universities across the
country. Former athletes Leann Warren, Quenna Beasley, Claudette Groenendaal and Grace Bakari talk
about breaking barriers, sharing the track with the male athletes, and how their success at Hayward Field
helped direct their future successes in life. Groenendaal is a 1981 graduate of North Salem High School
where she was a state champion in the 1500m as a sophomore. The film also follows present-day athletes
who provide an inside look at their personal pursuit of the Olympic dream.
