Winter running tips

Salem running guru John Gallagher, who directs several clinics, offers tips on running outside during inclement weather.

“Be sure of your footing,” he said. “You may have to change your stride pattern and shorten it. You’re most likely to fall when your landing heel hits.

“You need to run more flat-footed and on a nice surface. It takes more effort so don’t worry about your pace and back off a little. I tell people to enjoy it and don’t be tense.”

Gallagher had 101 people in his half-marathon clinic this season compared to 66 a year ago. He attributed the increase to word of mouth.

“A lot of people had success and came back from last year, and many told their friends about it,” he said.
