WE ARE THE SOURCE FOR TRACK & FIELD IN THE SALEM AREA
Whether you are a sprinter or a long distance runner, a good racing shoe can give you an edge over your competition. Racing spikes are ultra-lightweight and give you a good grip on the track while helping you to get up on your toes. They enable you to make it from the starting line to the finish line with the most minimal shoe possible sometimes shaving valuable seconds off your time. But is lighter always better? That depends on the individual athlete and the distance that you're running. Some athletes will actually run slower if they use a shoe that is too minimal. At GFR we can help you find the correct competition shoe for you.
Please visit our FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS section for more info on spikes.
Sprints
Sprint shoes are designed to reduce the weight on your feet and help push off your toes. Due to lack of heel cushion, they are usually insufficient for lots of jumping or longer events.
Most sprint spikes have a plate only below the toes and are very flexible through the middle. These types are suitable for most high school sprinters.

Mid-Distance
A middle-distance shoe is light and flexible. Since middle-distance runners do not stay on their toes the whole race, the mid-distance shoe has a slight heel cushion. Because of this extra heel, the mid-distance shoe is the most versatile track spike.

Athletes choosing to participate in several events often choose a mid-distance spike. If necessary it can be used for almost any event, although having a specific shoe for each event is ideal.
Combined with a J-Heel, it can be used for javelin or high jump, which typically require shoes with spikes both on the toes and heel.

Long Distance
While significantly lighter than a training shoe, distance spikes have a full-length cushion unlike those designed for shorter distances. They are slightly less flexible than a mid-distance spike, as they offer more protection. Distance spikes are suitable for the longest track distances.
Some multi-event athletes seeking a versatile spike may prefer a distance shoe because of it's full-length cushioning. The distance spike can be combined with a J-Heel for use in the high jump or javelin throw, which require heel spikes.

Some track runners may prefer a more protective shoe for the longer distances. If you are injury-prone or just want more cushion and support than a spike can offer, consider a road-racing flat. These shoes are still very lightweight but provide the shock absorption and arch support much more like a training shoe would.

Jumps
There is a specialized type of jump shoe designed for optimum performance in each jumping event. Jumping shoes do not normally work well for events other than those intended.
|
A long jump shoe features full-length cushion and has a long, rigid spike plate designed for explosive take-off.
Closest Match: For younger, less experienced jumpers, a distance spike. For experienced long jumpers, a power-sprint spike.

The high jump shoe is very rigid throughout and the entire bottom is textured for maximum traction. This type of shoe is unique in that the take-off foot has spikes in the back.

Often the shoe used for triple jump and pole vault is one and the same. Like a long jump shoe, there is full-length cushion but due to the various foot-strike patterns it is much more flexible.

Some athletes focus on more than just one jumping event, so a specialized jumping shoe for each event may be unrealistic unless you are contending for the State title. Specific shoes are the best option, but a distance spike may be a better option if you with to jump in multiple events.
|
The Turbo Jump is a combination Pole Vault, Triple, Long Jump spike.

Throws
Athletes focusing on throwing events need specific shoes suited for the motion of releasing the object. These field event shoes are perfect for the task of throwing but not suited for track events.
Rotational: Shot put, discus, and hammer throw all use the same type of shoe. These have a flat bottom designed for ease of spinning and gliding within the ring. Most have a textured bottom to limit the speed of rotation and maintain control. A rotational throwing shoe with a completely smooth bottom is intended for more advanced throwers.

Javelin: A javelin shoe, or boot, features full-length traction and heel spikes designed for the abrupt, forceful stop of forward motion. The boot also has a firmly-fastened top to maintain ankle stability. A running spike does not offer the same ankle support, but when combined with a J-Heel it can emulate the traction of a javelin boot.

Training Shoes
The first step to a successful season is the right pair of training shoes. It's easier said than done these days there are different types of shoes for specific foot types. If you end up with the wrong one you are at increased risk for injuries such as shin splints and knee pain.
Getting into the right type of shoe is more important than brand name, favorite colors, or the cool styles that your friends wear to practice. At GFR, we'll take a good look at your feet and your running form to determine the best type of shoe for YOU. Just because Hicham El Guerrouj wears the Nike Air Zoom Miler, does not mean that you also must wear this shoe to be fast. Taking the time to find the right level of support and proper fit is an essential step towards success in running and we're here to help you get there!
To make it even easier, we offer a 10% discount on shoes to all student athletes (middle school, high school, college and coaches too). This offer applies year-round, so stop by and get fitted soon! Don't forget to wear socks and bring your old running shoes with you. Yes, we will actually look at your smelly, old, filthy shoes they give us clues about your running shoe needs!
